System President

Application

This procedure applies to all the Community Colleges within the Colorado Community College System (CCCS).

Basis

The Board defines the requirements and authorizes the award of appropriate degrees by the Community Colleges. The Board delegates to the College Presidents the authority to select individuals to receive honorary degrees, subject to the approval of the System President.

Definition

Honorary degree means a degree awarded as an honor for an outstanding contribution to a particular field, to the community, or to society rather than as the result of matriculating and earning a degree based on studies at the College.

Criteria for Award

An honorary degree may be awarded to recognize and honor persons who have made exceptional contributions to a specific field, to the community, or to society.

Procedures

A Community College President may request approval for one or more persons to receive an honorary degree from the College by completing the form in Appendix A describing the nominee’s exceptional contributions to a specific field, to the community, or to society, and submitting the form to the System President. The System President’s approval will be noted on the form, which shall be retained at the System Office. The System President’s approval will be communicated to the College President via email.

Revising this Procedure

CCCS reserves the right to change any provision or requirement of this procedure at any time and the change shall become effective immediately.
