Arapahoe Community College student Ashton Pentony has been selected as one of 10 nationwide winners of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society’s prestigious Hurst Review NCLEX Scholarship.

The Scholarship, funded by national nursing exam prep company Hurst Review Services, is exclusively for Phi Theta Kappa nursing majors who plan to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX). Hurst Scholars will receive a code to cover the cost of the Hurst Review NCLEX study materials and a cash award to cover the NCLEX exam fees. The NCLEX is a standardized exam given by each state’s board of nursing to determine if RN or LPN/LVN candidates are competent for entry-level nursing positions.

Pentony studies in the Nursing dual-enrollment program offered by ACC and Metropolitan State University of Denver, which provides a seamless pathway for RN-to-BSN students (Registered Nurse to Bachelor of Science in Nursing). This partnership affords nursing students the opportunity to take advantage of a highly-efficient format where general education credits may be earned simultaneously at both institutions. Pentony will complete her Associate of Applied Science (Nursing) at ACC this month before sitting for her boards and pursuing her BSN at MSU Denver. Pentony served as the Vice President for Public Relations and Communication for ACC’s Sigma Phi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa.

“NCLEX exam costs often create a financial barrier for nursing students and can hinder their ability to enter the workforce,” said Dr. Monica Marlowe, Executive Director of the Phi Theta Kappa Foundation. “We hope this partnership with is the first of many to benefit our members who face the additional costs of certifications necessary for them to find employment.”

Phi Theta Kappa is the premier honor society recognizing the academic achievements of community college students and helping them to grow as scholars and leaders. PTK is comprised of more than 3.2 million members internationally and nearly 1,300 chapters in nine nations.
