Correct Keyboard Posture
Slant and tilt your keyboard away from you. (This is referred to as reverse tilting). Lean comfortably on your chair’s backrest. Keep your wrists straight with arms falling downward and parallel to the floor. Shoulders should be relaxed. Rest your hands lightly on the keyboard. Place an arm/wrist rest beside the keyboard for a more comfortable hand position. These tips should help alleviate wrist, neck and shoulder pain.

The Colorado Procurement Technical Assistance Center, a statewide organization designed to provide government contract assistance, opened this morning in Colorado Springs at 6 S. Tejon St, Ste. 850, collocated with the Greater Colorado Springs Chamber of Commerce.

About 60 people from the business community showed up at the Pikes Peak Center to celebrate its opening as well. A smaller gathering at the new offices earlier included a check presentation from major donor SAIC.
The mission of a Procurement Technical Assistance Center (PTAC) is to help businesses throughout the state to land government contracts and increase economic opportunities.

The program is funded by the U.S. Department of Defense, the State Economic Development Commission, and local contributions from throughout the State. This will assist Colorado’s small and middle market businesses to obtain contracts with federal, state, county and local governments. It will be based out of Colorado Springs with satellite workers providing additional coverage throughout the state.

“Colorado’s small businesses form the backbone of our economy,” Gov. Ritter has said. “Bringing a PTAC to Colorado is critical for our small business community, especially since Colorado has such a significant federal government and military presence. This center will allow for all of Colorado’s small businesses to get fair and equal access to do business with the government, at a time when there is much work to do to get our economy moving again.”

The Procurement Technical Assistance Program was authorized by Congress in 1985 in an effort to expand the number of businesses capable of participating in the Government Marketplace. There are now 93 PTACs in states around the country. Nationwide, businesses working through a PTAC were awarded contracts totaling $14 billion during the most recent procurement cycle, creating or retaining 334,000 jobs nationwide.

Chamber Health Care Council

Brings Together Experts to
Assess Health Care Reform
Impact to Chamber Members

The Chamber recently held  Health Care 2009- The Big Discussion where they brought together leading experts, providers and business owners & operators to delve into the current debate in Washington, DC regarding health care reform.  Business leaders from many different sectors came to hear keynote speaker Bill Lindsay speak on the different reform proposals.  Mr. Lindsay’s presentation was followed by a panel of elected officials and experts assessing the impact to business from all angles.  The Chamber wrapped up with a seminar providing a Health Care Toolbox to help save costs on health care, with information ranging from wellness and prevention, examples of how area small businesses can get involved and information on saving money through Benefit Design.

The breakfast session allowed Lindsay to turn thousands of pages of reform into approachable and manageable sections for greater understanding.  For more information, or to review the power point presentation, go to http://bit.ly/b3Teh

The panel presented varying perspectives from the different sectors as to the impact to business and to an individual.  Experts on the panel were:

•    State Representative Amy Stephens
•    Ann Oatman Gardner from U.S. Senator Michael Bennet’s Office
•    John Suits from Memorial Health System
•    Dr. David Ross Emergency Department Physician and Representative from the El Paso County Medical Society
•    Dan Oftedahl from Humana
•    BJ Scott from Peak Vista Community Health Centers and
•    Ryan Clement from the Campaign for Responsible Health Reform.

These experts discussed a public option, health care delivery, insurance reform and the many possible options reform could cover.  The wide variety of viewpoints and needs were clearly shown as they answered questions from Chamber members.

Debbie Chandler, CEO of Colorado Springs Health Partners, presented Wellness and Prevention as part of the  Health Care Toolbox.  Chandler illustrated that 75% of medical costs are from preventable diseases or conditions, yet only 4% of small businesses have wellness and prevention programs to lower their costs.  As a medium sized business, CSHP also had to create a wellness program for their employees.

The day’s events were sponsored by Humana, the Chamber’s Health Care Partner; Kaiser Permanente; Memorial Health Systems; Conspire! and the Campaign for Responsible Health Reform .

For more information on the Chamber’s Humana plan go to the Chamber website (http://www.coloradospringschamber.org/business/health.asp).

Government Contractors - DCAA Hot Topics & Current Updates

Wednesday, November 18, 2009
The Broadmoor Hotel, Colorado Springs, CO
1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
$25 per person
Register Now

This customized seminar will focus specifically on the current events relative to DCAA audits of contractor data, systems, and proposals. Government audits of your company are a way of life if you do business with the government, and the likelihood of those audits, and audit issues, increases depending on numerous factors, one of which is your ability to successfully anticipate, engage and support the auditors when they arrive. Failing to understand the demands of these audits, and not recognizing highly judgmental and sometimes weak audit positions, can cost you time and money as well as lost credibility with your customers. In addition, many contractors are learning that while the rules haven't changed, the interpretations and application of those rules certainly has, thus adding time, money, and frustration to the audit process.
