OJC to offer EMT Intermediate program this spring
LA JUNTA - Otero Junior College will begin offering a year-long Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Intermediate program this spring. The 17-credit program includes four required courses taught over three semesters. The first course in the series will be EMS 203-EMT Intermediate I, scheduled to begin on January 28, 2008.
To qualify for the EMT- Intermediate program, students must already be an EMT- Basic and be able to provide a letter of recommendation from their EMS supervisor. The EMT Intermediate program is coordinated and taught by local advanced level EMTs and paramedics and is designed to qualify the graduate to take the national certification exam for EMT- Intermediate.
The first course being offered this spring, EMS 203-EMT Intermediate I, will introduce students to an in-depth study of the Emergency Medical System and specifically, the role of the intermediate emergency level practitioner. The course includes medication administration, intravenous therapy, advanced cardiac life support, and many other skills and experiences. The program includes theory, laboratory skills practice and testing, and clinical experience in hospital and pre-hospital settings.
A program information meeting will be held at OJC on Monday, January 21 at 6:00 p.m. in Life Science, room 103. Anyone interested in becoming an EMT Intermediate level practitioner should attend this meeting to help understand the qualifications and program expectations. The first course will begin on January 28.
